Keith Selvey Trophy Relay Gala
19th September 2009
September the 19th saw the third Keith Selvey relay gala hosted by Wolverhampton Swimming Club at Central Baths. The club were pleased to welcome the Selvey family again and took the opportunity to present his wife Lillian with some flowers, presented by Doug Cooling, our chairman.
There were a total of seven teams taking part this year which included: Wolverhampton A and B teams, Oakengates, Cannock Phoenix, Bilston, Wombourne and Chase. The trophy holders were Chase SC.
This year the club were able to enter two teams into the gala giving all swimmers an opportunity to take part. Our swimmers had a fantastic night and the A team managed to win the gala comfortably over the other teams, winning by over 30 points when the final points totals came in.
Some notable team swims were the girls 11’s and under A team who managed to win all their races, with the B team also coming in the top 4. The girls 13’s and under A team also had four wins out of four and the boys 13’s and under A team had three wins and a second place. The A team’s 9 year old girls and boys also won all their races, including those with the masters. The 9 year old girls also had a first and second finish in the medley relay. A special thank you must be said to the masters’ swimmers who did really well in their races, many of whom have not raced for quite some time!
The atmosphere was fantastic; the spectators, swimmers and coaches alike had a night of great fun and the spirit of night was maintained once more in memory of Keith. We’re sure that Keith would have been very proud that the club managed to win back the trophy this year.
Wolverhampton SC would like to thank all the other teams for their participation in this fun event and look forward to next year!
Final points were: 1st: Wolverhampton A: 256, 2nd: Chase SC 220, 3rd: Cannock Phoenix 200, 4th: Bilston 198, 5th Wombourne 151, 6th: Oakengates 91, 7th Wolverhampton B: 61. A full set of results are available here; KS Trophy Relay Results 2009

Many of those pictured, all aged between 10 and 14 years of age have multiple qualifying times in a range of swimming disciplines.
Two of the clubs swimmers Danielle Mullinder (12) and Georgia Driver (11) have also achieved National Qualifying times in the 200m Breaststroke and 1500 Freestyle respectively.
The National finals are the highest achievable level in competition swimming for swimmers aged 11 - 18 years. To reach this level both swimmers have had to show talent and commitment.
The girls will compete in the finals held in July at Ponds Forge, Sheffield. Danielle and Georgia both swim in the performance lanes at the club the result of recent restructuring which is already showing results.
Wolverhampton Swimming club is also riding high following this years continued success in the Nuneaton Junior League. The club were promoted last year to the hotly contested league division 1 and are currently sitting comfortably at the top end of the division ahead of many larger clubs with enviable league reputations.
